Done Boating For The Season? Come See Us

Boat Trailer Maintenance DenverAs the temperatures dip, and the days grow shorter, it’s time to store your boat or other watercraft for the season. Spare a moment to think about your trailer, and then make an appointment to come and see us. Foregoing the routine inspection, maintenance, and repair of your recreational trailer at the end of the season can take the fun right out of future weekends with trailer issues.

Your Boat Trailer—Aluminum—But Not Indestructible

For transporting, launching, and retrieving watercraft, aluminum is the standout choice for a lightweight and corrosion resistant trailer that stands up to frequent immersion in water.

However, aluminum still can suffer from corrosion. Fortunately, aluminum usually forms a patina of aluminum oxide that resists deeper corrosion. That said, there are trouble spots in the design of every boat trailer that bear careful inspection for accelerated corrosion and metal fatigue, particularly anywhere that gets pitted by road gravel or scraped when launching or retrieving. One of the notable drawbacks of aluminum is that it doesn’t fail gradually like steel, it fails catastrophically.

Aluminum is also subject to “galling” where it meets with dissimilar metals like steel, such as between the frame and the trailer jack. Galling is also not unheard of between two mated aluminum parts either. Galling weakens the molecular structure of the affected surfaces. Have the experts at Ainsworth Trailer Repair check your boat trailer for both corrosion and galling issues and mitigate minor issues before they turn major.

Water Attacks Everything Else Too

Water is chemically a solvent, which makes it damaging to wiring harnesses, cast iron brake drums, leaf springs, and lubricated wheel hubs, or anywhere else the water may take awhile to be driven off. All of these components suffer accelerated wear when being repeatedly exposed to water immersion and evaporation, making all of these components critical annual inspection points.
